Somerset go through to the second round by 97 - 86
Showers were the order of the day as the Tigers endeavoured to pull back a deficit of 14 points from Friday's disappointing first leg at the Oak Tree Arena. The reward for the winners of this tie was a second round cup tie against Tigers' fiercest rivals Edinburgh after the East coast side took care of Sheffield on Friday. Gate Pattern B was in operation.
Heat 1 Magnus Zetterstrom showed why he's the Premier League's top man with a great start and, when partner Simon Walker drove hard up the inside to join him, Tigers were on the back foot. Lee Dicken chased hard to no avail and George Stancl's last place got Tigers off to the worst possible start, trailing now by 18 points.
Zetterstrom, Walker, Dicken, Stancl (1-5) (1-5) - 59.7
Heat 2 Lee Smethills commanded the first turn turn but David McAllan got stuck at the back. David, however, is made of sterner stuff these days and got stuck in, passing Tomas Suchanek down the back straight coming off turn 2 on the second lap and headed away after Danny Warwick. David's persistence paid off as a wide sweep and sharp cut-back coming off the last turn took the second place by half a wheel, bringing the scores level again.
Smethills, McAllan, Warwick, Suchanek (5-1) (6-6) - 61.3
Heat 3 Jordan Frampton almost missed out, coming out with the wrong helmet colour on. His mechanic was quickly out with the yellow colour and the number 4 made it by seconds. As it turned out that was the most exciting thing in this heat as Robert Ksiezak was powerful in the first turn and Shane Parker swept round him for the two Tigers to take maximum points. Kramer was surprisingly lacklustre at the back.
Parker, Ksiezak, Frampton, Kramer (5-1) (11-7) - 61.5
Heat 4 David made a super start with Warwick beside him. Trent Leverington swept round turn 2 into second but Warwick pulled this back with his own outside run on turn 4 to close the first lap back in second. Trent, however, was not to be denied and a neat inside drive under the Rebel on turn 3, lap 3 took him through as Warwick's wide line took him too close and he clipped the fence. Hawkins was smart to lay his bike down and the referee was left with no option but to exclude the reserve as the primary cause of the stoppage and award the race. This meant that Tigers were on pace to claw back the deficit.
McAllan, Leverington, Hawkins, Warwick (F.Exc) (5-1) (16-8) - Awarded
Heat 5 Zetterstrom got the better of Shane into the first turn but Tigers' skipper lined up his run on the home straight to dive under turn 1 on the second lap. His drive took him further out and Zetterstrom came down with the Aussie excluded in spite of his protests. The re-run saw Zetterstrom again taking the early lead and it was left to Robert to hold second.
Zetterstrom, Ksiezak, Walker, Parker (Exc) (2-4) (18-12) - 62.0
Heat 6 Hawkins gated well and pushed George wide in the turn and it looked like the opening pairing were going to miss out again. George used his position to power round Hawkins on turn 2 for a good victory.
Stancl, Hawkins, Suchanek, Dicken (3-3) (21-15) - 60.9
Heat 7 Kramer got the advantage as Lee was trapped at the back. Trent kept hard on the Swede's heels but couldn't make the breakthrough, with Lee looking disappointing at the back against the awkward looking Frampton and Rebels had pulled back more points on the day.
Kramer, Leverington, Frampton, Smethills (2-4) (23-19) - 61.0
Heat 8 Lee S replaced Lee D. Warwick got away at the start and certainly looked comfortable in front in spite of David's close attentions. Lee managed to drive inside Walker on turn 4, lap 3 for the vital third point.
Warwick, McAllan, Smethills, Walker (3-3) (26-22) - 61.3
Heat 9 Shane and Robert hit the front but Robert turned awkwardly and this let Hawkins pass round on turn 2.
Parker, Hawkins, Ksiezak, Suchanek (4-2) (30-24) - 61.0
Heat 10 George made a good start and Lee, on a dodgy sounding bike, drew level but Kramer flew past. Both Tigers knew the part they had to play and stuck to their respective tasks, ensuring another heat advantage although the lively Frampton kept Lee on his toes.
Stancl, Kramer, Dicken, Frampton (4-2) (34-26) - 61.0
Heat 11 After the first attempt was ruled unsatisfactory, Zetterstrom got away at the second time of asking but Lee got the home fans roaring as he swept round the Premier League's top man on turn 2. He spent the next two and a half laps with the Swede chasing until he got the breakthrough on turn 4, lap 3 as the rain started.
Zetterstrom, Smethills, Leverington, Walker (3-3) (37-29) - 64.6
Heat 12 We had a half hour delay whilst we waited for the rain to clear. After consultation with both teams it was decided to carry on although that looked the least likely outcome. Warwick was brought in to replace the ineffective Suchanek. Shane sped from the start but David missed out at the back. David chased, though, and came under Warwick on turn 4, lap 3, almost coming unstuck, but he held on as Tigers came within 4 points on aggregate. Unfortunately this meant that Somerset could use a Tactical Ride option in Heat 13.
Parker, Kramer, McAllan, Warwick (4-2) (41-31) - 61.8
Heat 13 As expected, Zetterstrom was nominated for a Tactical Ride and this paid off handsomely as the Somerset captain made a terrific start with Hawkins joining him briefly until George overcame his challenge. This effectively won the tie for the southerners as Tigers needed the Rebels to fail to finish in at least one race.
Zetterstrom, Stancl, Hawkins, Leverington (2-7) (43-38) - 63.1
Heat 14 Both Rebels got away at the start but Robert roared round the outside of turn 2 to pass Frampton. Warwick seemed to be enjoying the fresh air out front and attacked the track in spite of the conditions and proved to be the tie winner.
Warwick, Ksiezak, Frampton, Smethills (2-4) (45-42) - 63.8
Heat 15 Kramer trapped and Shane gave chase ahead of the unbeaten Zetterstrom. Tigers' skipper belied the conditions with a stunning outside pass on turn 3 lap 2 through the narrowest of gaps for the points that secured the win on the day although the tie was lost. Robert fell on lap 3.
Parker, Kramer, Zetterstrom, Kseizak (3-3) (48-45) - 62.5
The Tigers faced an uphill struggle after Friday's first leg but their recovery from the first race blip looked good until they lost their way mid-match. Shane and David were best for the home men with Zetterstrom and Kramer doing a good holding job ably supported by former Bandit Warwick and it's the Rebels who go on to meet the Monarchs in the next round.
