The Tigers skipper first rode in this country in 1991 and in that time he has primarily ridden in the top flight of British speedway. Only in his debut season at Ipswich, a year at King's Lynn in 2003 and his two seasons at Glasgow has Shane ridden in the second tier of racing in this country. Since Shane joined the Tigers at the start of the 2004 season his performances for the team have been sensational. From day one he has been the King of Ashfield, which is no mean feat when you consider the performances that James Grieves and George Stancl have put in around the circuit. Shane has regularly featured at the top of the Tigers scorechart in all Glasgow fixtures, both home and away. If the skipper doesn't score heavily then this leaves a big void in the Tigers scoring, which means it is a struggle for the rest of the side to ensure a Tigers win. The Aussie took to the Ashfield track like a duck to water. His debut against the Armadale side saw him drop one point from five rides, but he then went on a run of being undefeated on twenty five consecutive races around Saracen Park. This run spanned six matches and Shane's sequence was ended by none other than Kauko Nieminen. Hopefully that bodes well for the coming season! If 2004 was good then 2005 was even better. Shane increased both his home and away averages and just failed to reach the magic landmark of a 10 point average. It takes a very good rider to defeat our Aussie at Saracen Park, and his team riding exploits with James Cockle in particular have been quite superb. When a rider is holding back two opponents who are clearly going faster than his partner at the front of the race, then that is a mark of true speedway class. There are few riders these days who can truly team ride but the Tigers skipper is in that elite group. Shane's efforts in our Premier League Pairs triumph will long be remembered by grateful Glasgow fans. His courage in riding through the pain barrier in order to partner George Stancl to victory was exceptional. When he came to the UK in 1991 he joined Ipswich who at that time were in the same league as the Tigers. He stayed with the Suffolk club for four years before joining Middlesbrough, easily being their top man when the first and second divisions amalgamated. He moved back south to spend two years with King's Lynn and then a year riding for Hull Vikings before returning to King's Lynn in 2000. Peterborough was his next track where he stayed until the end of the 2003 season. In that season Shane took advantage of the doubling down rule to also ride Premier League for King's Lynn, in what was his third spell with the Norfolk side. It wouldn't be wrong to suggest that few at Ashfield realised how good Shane was when he joined the Tigers. We knew he would be a good signing but never realised the effect he would have on the club. He has been riding for Glasgow for two years and his contribution on track has been immense. Definitely one of the best riders to have worn the red and white.
